Source: NBC News Author: CLAUDIO LAVANGA TICAN CITY — The Israeli and Palestinian presidents joined in an unprecedented prayer meeting with Pope Francis Sunday, a gesture the pontiff hopes will "re-create a desire, a possibility" of kick-starting the stalled Middle East peace process. Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted a surprise public invitation from Francis to come to “his home” to pray together during his recent visit to the region. “It is my hope that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new journey where we seek the things that unite, so as to overcome the things that divide,” Francis said Sunday. He thanked the presidents for accepting his invitation, and said that people of varied cultures and religions had been praying for a meeting of this nature. The Vatican is keen to play down suggestions that Sunday’s event is political, but it is nonetheless a symbolic gesture that has the power to stir public opinion and put pressure on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to find a way out of the stalemate.

Phillip Holmes from Christ & Pop Culture notesSterling as one public example of widespread racism still alive and well today. “Don’t think for one second that believers that think like Sterling don’t exist,” he writes, and share his own experience as a black man in largely white church circles. According to Holmes, interracial dating and marriage is still a huge sticking point for many white parents and pastors. His own college mentor dissuaded him from interracial dating, and admitted later that “he could not bear the thought of one of his daughters marrying a black man.” So what are Christians to make of this incognito racism in our churches and families? The book, subtitled “Lessons for living a good life without God,” tells the true account of Alom Shaha, a science teacher who was raised as a Muslim in London. After his mother dies, Shaha rejects Islam and become an atheist. The campaign to send copies of the book, called the Young Atheist Handbook for Schools campaign, was started by Ian Horsewell. Horsewell said he wanted students to consider their own beliefs. According to the Star Tribune students at East High School in Madison recited the godless pledge in March. Other reports claim some recitations replaced “under God” with the word “peace.” T.J. Mertz, a member of the School board told the Star Tribune it was unclear whether the students acted on their own or were instructed by a staff member to recite the altered pledge. Director Darren Aronofsky called his movie “the least biblical biblical film ever made,” The Telegraph reported. He also claimed his leading character, Noah, was the “first environmentalist,” something that suggests the movie storyline doesn’t exactly follow the Bible’s. And something else the suggests a serious divergence from the biblical account: Not once during the movie is the name “God” spoken, an early reviewer found, The Telegraph reported.
